Since Colombia’s Prosecutor General Néstor Humberto Martínez took office in July 2016, 156 senators, mayors, presidential advisers, governors and other officials have had corruption cases opened against them.
The news was reported by El Tiempo. Two big names in the spotlight are the U party’s Musa Besaile and Bernardo Miguel Elías Vidal – two of the nation’s most voted congressmen. Both congressmen were to take part in the 2018 presidential elections. Neither of them have been convicted, however now that both politicians are imprisoned their political participations have ceased.
President Juan Manuel’s ‘U’ party houses the highest percentage of corrupt politicians, followed by the Liberal Party, Radical Change, and the Conservative party. Socialist opposition party Democratic Pole is least the investigated.
Officials are being investigated for participation in cases such as Odebrecht – the Brazilian company accused of paying bribes to gain millions work contracts in Colombia – and Reficar, a mulit-billion dollar embezzlement case related to the Cartagena refinery.
