Tennis: Nadal retains Roland Garros crown
Rafael Nadal won his ninth French open crown. In a battle of titans, the world number one faced world number two, Novak Djokovic in the final. The Spaniard dismissed the Serb in four sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4. After two tight sets Nadal’s superior fitness turned the game to his advantage. In the women’s tournament Sharapova won her fifth grand slam.
The next Grand Slam tournament will be Wimbledon, starting on June 23.
Field hockey: Australia field hockey World Cup victory
The Kookaburras beat the Dutch in their own back yard to retain the World Cup. Venturing into the lion’s den, Australia outclassed the home team, finishing 6-1. It was the other way around in the women’s tournament, with the Netherlands taking a tight 1-0 victory over Australia. Argentina won the bronze in both men’s and women’s tournaments.
Ice Hockey: Los Angeles Kings make history
The Stanley Cup, the final showdown in the NHL, Los Angeles Kings beat the New York Rangers 4-1 in a best-of-seven series. The final match went to second overtime before Alec Martinez forced the decision. Kings’ forward Justin Williams was awarded Most Valuable Player in the final.
Basketball: San Antonio Spurs take fifth NBA title
With a repeat line-up from last year’s final, this time San Antonio Spurs took revenge on the Miami Heat clinching their fifth NBA title with a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series. In the final game, the formation with veteran stars Duncan, Ginobili and Parker beat the Heat formed around superstar Lebron James, Wade and Bosh by 104-87. The 22 year-old Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs was crowned most valuable player in the final.
