Giant footballers terrorise world capitals. This can only mean one thing: that a World Cup Anthem has landed.
Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra and Italian DJ Gianluca Vacchi have teamed up to release ‘Love’, a 3-minute clip of gigantic Colombian footballers kicking it through capital cities like Rome, New York and Shanghai in what is sure to be the unofficial anthem of the 2018 World Cup in Russia in June.
Colombian footballers James Rodriguez, Radamel Falco and Yerry Mina kick off the Godzilla-like rampage before being joined by the artists and, for no good reason, former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves. DJ Vacchi continues to fill the role of ‘uncle who’s first on the dancefloor’. Fans will recognise him as the man enthusiastically mouthing the lyrics in Mi Gente, the video by reggaton Urwurm supremo J Balvin. Cartagueños recognise Vacchi from the extravagant parties he held off the Carribean coast.
The anthem will now rival the already released Colours by American Jason Derulo. A second bilingual video has since been made including Colombian superstar Maluma, who sings the Spanish verses. Maluma, who is contractually obliged to sing the words ‘Maluma baby’ in every song, kept the lyrics tasteful this time in a song that’s likely to accompany every ad break during the big event in Russia next month.
And it’s not the first time that Colombians feature heavily in World Cup anthems. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Shakira gave us Waka Waka which, to this day, is in the standard repertoire of vuvuzela orchestras across the world.
For those looking to brush up on their Russian ahead of the World Cup can look forward to the official Russian World Cup Entry by Eurovision semi-finalist Polina Gagarina, Egor Creed y Dj SMASH. The chorus reads “We know the truth. You’re on our team,” which may also echo the conclusions of the ongoing Mueller investigation.
Whatever the results, we can be sure that this won’t be the last time we hear these songs as the World Cup rolls out 51 days from now.
