Djokovic and Kvitova Wimbledon champions
Novak Djokovic takes his second Wimbledon crown after a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Swiss veteran Roger Federer. In a five set thriller, the no.2 seeded Serb came back after a rusty start to get his first match points in the fourth set. The fourth seed Federer stepped up his game and finally ran away with that set. The final set was fairly even until 3-3 when Federer squandered a break point. Three games later, Djokovic was more careful with his chance to clinch the win. With his victory Djokovic took the number one position in the ATP World tour ranking from Nadal, who was ousted early in the tournament.
In the women’s final, Petra Kvitova outclassed Eugenie Bouchard to take her second Wimbledon title. The one-sided final finished 6-3, 6-0 in favour of the number six seeded Czech. At just 19 years old, Bouchard had a great tournament coming into the final but, in the end, couldn’t deal with the power play from Kvitova. After her previous win in 2011, Kvitova moves to number four in the WTA ranking.
Tiger Woods back in the game
Golf superstar Tiger Woods is back on the PGA tour after a four month recovery from back surgery. The American made his return in the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland. It was a somewhat unremarkable performance as his game was not up to par and he missed the cut for only the tenth time in his career. It is predicted that he will follow this up in the Scottish open from July 10-13 or a week later at the British Masters.
Opening of the 2014 Commonwealth Games
The 2014 Commonwealth Games will begin in Glasgow on July 23, bringing together 71 nations who will compete in 17 different sports. The Queen is due to open the event.
The 12 days of competition will make up the largest ever sports event to be held in Glasgow, with the competition taking place in 14 venues throughout the city.
The Scottish theme will include a mascot called Clyde Thistle, a chance to try haggis amongst the 2,000 different items on the menu in the athletes’ village, and tartan inspired outfits for the Scottish delegation.
Delhi hosted the last Commonwealth Games in 2010, and the next one will be on the Gold Coast in 2018.
