On Tenerife, Osorio came just short of taking her second WTA title this year. In the final, Ann Li from the United States proved too strong for the Colombian 6-1, 6-4.

In the final, the 19-year-old Colombian took the first game, but the American won the next six games to take the first set. In the second set, the two talented players stayed even until 4-4 before Li stepped up to take the last two games and win the tournament. With the place in the final, Osorio jumped to the 53th place on the WTA ranking. It was Osorio’s second final of the year, after she had already taken the title in the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogotá earlier this year.

Despite the disappointment in the final, the 19-year-old Osorio can look back on a successful tournament on the Spanish island. In the opening round, Osorio claimed her first top-10 scalp with a shock win over world number six Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian, first seed in this tournament, had taken the first set, but Osorio didn’t look impressed and took the following two sets to record the biggest win in her career.

The player from Cúcuta continued with victories over Mayar Sherif from Egypt in the second round and Saisai Zheng from China in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, she was waiting another tough match against Camila Giorgi. The Italian, Olympic quarter finalist and winner of the Masters tournament in Montreal, Canada in August this year, took an early break in the first set, but Osorio didn’t budge came back and went on to win the set and the match.

After the defeat in Tenerife, Osorio announced it was the last tournament in her successful breakthrough season, taking some time to recover from physical inconveniences. The young Colombian is set to be back at the start of next season in the Australian swing.
