A Colombian duo has claimed the crown in this year’s Congreso Mundial de la Salsa in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Adrianita Ávila and Jefferson Benjumea were victorious in the 19th edition of the world’s biggest salsa championship, finishing ahead of around 800 participants from 20 countries, and cementing Colombia’s reputation as one of the world’s salsa champions.
The final eight pairs did not know in advance what song they would be dancing to, but the Colombians managed to freestyle to ‘Señor Sereno’, leaving their competitors in their wake.
Second place went to Italian pair Serena Maso and Simone Sanfilippo, who edged ahead of US couple Isabel Freiberger and Fausto Félix.
The Puerto Rican team, Germarie Cartagena and Obrian Hernández, triumphed in the youth category, competing to Celia Cruz’s ‘Cucala’.
The Congreso Mundial de la Salsa also included dance workshops, numerous dance troupes and live shows from well-known Latin music groups and artists, including Sonora Ponceña, Johnny Rivera, Don Perignon, Yan Collazo and numerous others.
