Margaritas

From date nights to spicy surprises, Laura Sharkey checks out the best bars for sipping a refreshing Bogota margarita cocktail

The margarita has long been the cocktail of choice for tequila fans everywhere. This sharp but refreshing drink is great for any occasion: perfect for a date night, or for loosening up to dance the night away. With that in mind, here are The Bogota Post’s picks of some of the best margaritas across the city: from classic versions to surprising twists on an old favourite.

Best overall – Bogota Beer Company

Where? Locations throughout the city
How much? From $20,000

We all know that the BBC is home to some of the city’s most well-loved beers; less common knowledge is this hidden gem on the cocktail menu. The margarita is served to you personally from a cocktail shaker, it’s extremely refreshing and the portion size is generous. This one hits the spot every time.

Best value – Zona 35

Where? Calle 35 # 6 – 24
How much? From $10,000

Turn up Calle 35 after the Parque Nacional and you will find Zona 35. There is no menu, so just ask the bartender for his signature margarita, and you will not be disappointed. The drink is revitalising, cool and delicious, and the bar attracts a trendy mix of students and young professionals. What’s more, this one will not tug on the purse strings.

Spicy splurge – La Destileria

Where? Calle 85 # 12 -91
How much? From $29,000

Home to some of the best cocktails in town, La Destileria certainly knows how to shake ’em. The cocktails may be pricey, but the quality is exceptional. Their twist on margaritas involves jalapeño chillies. Not recommended for those who can’t handle their spice, and certainly not for those looking for a light drink – this one packs a punch!

Best with friends – Cine Tonala

Where? Carrera 6 # 35 – 37
How much? From $21,000

One of the hottest joints in town, Cine Tonala arrived from Mexico City to Bogota. This place is perfect for an evening chatting away with friends. Get comfy in the atmospheric bar, order from the selection of home-made Mexican food, and top it off with a margarita or two. The perfect mix!

Best for a date – Treffen

Where? Calle 7 # 56 – 17
How much? From $21,000

A secret gem. As soon as you enter the bar, you are transported to another world and another time. Perfect for a night with your other half, or to impress a first date. One thing’s for sure, the margaritas will quench your thirst. Tasty, fresh and subtle, these cocktails will have you playing the bar’s giant twister game or singing karaoke in no time!

Best for happy hour – 1492

Where? Carrera 12A # 83 -11
How much? From $8,900  (happy hour 4-7pm Monday to Saturday)

For under $10,000 at one of the best locations in town, 1492’s cocktail is not to be missed. From 4 until 7, most cocktails are half price or better. Order one of their easy-to-drink margaritas, and watch the world go by as day turns to night and the T comes to life.

Best for after work – The Irish Pub

Where? Usaquen, Zona Rosa & La Candelaria
How much? From $19,900

If you want the full ambience of the after work crowd in Bogota and you need an excuse to catch another happy hour head to The Irish Pub. We all know that the Irish like their tipple, but they also make a great margarita here. Their cocktails are the perfect combination of lemony and sweet, all you need to make post-work drinks the best part of the working week.
