Colombian actress Sofia Vergara will be the voice of Bart Simpson’s new teacher in an episode of the new season of The Simpsons, according to Entertainment Weekly. The actress, who found international fame in the hit comedy series Modern Family, has previously voiced characters in animated Fox series such as Family Guy and The Cleveland Show.

In the episode titled “Teenage Mutant Milk-Caused Hurdles”, Vergara plays Mrs Berrera, a former war veteran who shows a softer side to Bart, after he drinks a milk substitute filled with bad hormones. Afterwards, he experiences early puberty, grows a little mustache and develops feelings for his teacher.

Mrs Berrera, however, winds up in the midst of a romantic rivalry, as she draws the attentions of Principal Skinner. “We thought it’d be interesting if both Bart and Skinner had a crush on the same woman,” notes Simpsons’ executive producer Al Jean.

Jean also adds weight to the rumours that Vergara may appear in more than one episode. “We have a situation where Bart doesn’t have a regular teacher, so she may or may not come back” he says, in reference to the death of Marcia Wallace, the actress who voiced Bart’s previous teacher, Mrs. Krabappel.

The new season of The Simpsons begins on September 27, with Vergara’s episode expected to air somewhere in the middle of the season.
