Colombia Pro Cycling not invited to Giro d’Italia
Colombia’s official cycling team Colombia Pro Cycling did not receive an invitation to the Giro d’Italia 2015. The team, which consists of just Colombians, finished second place in two different stages with Fabio Duarte in the 2014 edition.
The organisers RCS Sports made their choice public with four Italian teams and a Polish team receiving the wild cards. They explained during the presentation that they want to focus more on local cycling projects, leaving the Colombians with consolation rounds such as Milan-San Remo, Tirreno Adriatico and the giro di Lombardia. Rigoberto Uran will be keeping Colombia’s hopes high, aiming for his first grand tour victory, while Nairo Quintana will put everything on winning the Tour de France.
Favourites win Australian open
World Number One Novak Djokovic clinched the 2015 Australian Open title. The Serbian favourite fought off Scottish Andy Murray in the final 7-6 6-7 6-3 6-0. After two hard-fought sets in which there was no room for error, Djokovic took control in the third to outplay the visibly exhausted Murray and convincingly claim his fourth Australian Open title. Colombians Alejandro Gonzalez and Santiago Giraldo made it to the second round. In the ladies’ tournament, in which no Colombians participated, the final between world number one Serena Williams and number two Maria Sharapova was easy prey for the American number one with set scores of 6-3 7-6 . The undisputed number one picked up her 19th grand slam title and has now won the last 16 matches against the Russian. The tour will now move to the Americas, working up to the masters tournaments in Indian Wells in March.
