As we edge towards the end of the year, most sports are also reaching the end of the season. But that’s different for the Liga Águila – the domestic football league was on hold during the international break but will continue with five more rounds before the next international break. On the weekend of October 22, the top match between Junior de Barranquilla and Independiente Santa Fe will take place in the stadium that hosted Colombia last week.
Where Santa Fe has got their entire focus on the league, Junior is in the cup final and in the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana, El Tiburón will be up against Sport Recife. On October 26, Junior will be playing in Brazil with the return leg in Barranquilla on November 2.
One of the few big sporting events left in 2017 is the World Archery Championships in Mexico City. Between October 15 and 22, Sara López is aiming for her first individual World Championship title in the compound discipline. The 22-year-old is ranked number two in the world and is one of the top favourites for the gold medal. Sara López has already won the women’s team competition in 2013 and a bronze medal in rainy Copenhagen two years ago but she is still searching for the highest crown in the non-Olympic discipline.
For Colombia’s baseball fans there is also plenty of fun. At this moment Colombian star pitcher José Quintana is in the final stages of the MLB with the Chicago Cubs. The 28-year-old pitcher comes in hot form into the playoffs, with the Cubs being an outsider to make it to the World Series at the end of October.
When the MLB finishes, the Colombian Professional Baseball League (LCBP) winter season will be about to start. Four teams, all located in the Colombian coastal region, will be fighting for the title. Current titleholder Leones de Montería, Caimanes de Barranquilla, Tigres de Cartagena, and Toros de Sincelejo will battle in a league that runs from November until January for the Colombian baseball title.
