Few Colombians compete in 101st edition of the Tour de France
With the World Cup still in full swing, every other sport has taken a back seat, including cycling. But in spite of a relatively low-profile start, this year’s Tour de France promises electrifying excitement for those in love with the sport.
The initial stages in England have already produced some exciting clashes, with more spectacles guaranteed as the riders come into the Alps and later the Pyrenees.
All eyes will be on the struggle between the two greats of the sport right now: current champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador. And there’s a third contender waiting in the wings in the shape of Vicenzo Nibali, who’s sure to add some spice to the race and could well challenge the leading duo – he’s already got himself in the yellow leader jersey after a brave attack in the second stage.
Although there are only a few Colombian riders (Janier Acevedo for Garmin, Jose Serpa for Lampre and Darwin Atapuma for BMC), keeping the successful Giro d’Italia in mind, we might still be in for a surprise performance and may yet see a Colombian day in the Tour. Will it be on July 20, Independence Day? More likely it will be in the battle for the polka dot jersey of best climber in this edition of ‘la Grande Boucle’.
We may as well join Nairo Quintana, resting after his Giro victory, who will be sitting in front of a TV, looking closely at his biggest opponents for next year’s edition – the biggest cycling event of the year will not disappoint.
