Golfing champion Camilo Villegas ends four year title drought
With a quality 17 under par, Camilo Villegas took the crown at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country club in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 32 year old from Medellin finished the tournament with a decent 63 round.
Spiderman – his nickname based on the stance he manoeuvres himself into to read putts – held Nick Watney, Heath Slocum and Freddie Jacobson one stroke behind him, claiming his first title on the PGA tour since March 2010.
The once-number seven PGA-ranked Colombian said after his first round of 63 strokes about his poor streak: “It is just the nature of the game. Ups, downs, good years, average years, bad years. If you ask any player in the field, everybody wants to play better. Do I want to play better? Yes. Do I feel like I have played to my potential the last two and a half years? No. But again, it’s not all about golf. You’ve got to be a little bit easy on yourself and just enjoy life.”
His self-confidence and apparent lack of stress paid off over the weekend. After his fourth career win on the PGA tour he stated at the press conference: “It feels great to be here with the trophy sitting next to me. I always work hard and I love the game, but it starts getting on top of you and I feel a little lighter right now, but what a great week. I’m happy to be here with the trophy.”
Villegas will take his great form into the FedExCup Playoffs starting next week with The Barclays at the Ridgewood country club in Paramus, New Jersey.
